AI Sci-Fi Novel - “The Stargazer”

Chapter 10: The Second Salvation and the Final Sacrifice

1. (Ancient Times)

Gron’s resentment, like a long-suppressed beast, finally broke free from the cage called “awe.”

His son’s death, coupled with Kli’s “favoritism” toward Ona, became the perfect fuel to ignite the fire in Gron’s heart. He no longer needed a “god” with personal biases; he needed a “sinner,” a scapegoat responsible for all his tribe’s suffering.

Gron started whispering at night, snarling softly to the males who had also lost loved ones. He used the most primal yet effective language to incite their sorrow and fear.

Gron’s accusation: “That ‘ghost god’ abandoned us!” he roared, his voice filled with grief and indignation. “He only protects those he likes! Our children died, our companions died, and he just watched! He’s not a god; he’s a demon bringing disaster!”

Fear and resentment spread more easily than wisdom. Soon, the tribe’s hostility towards Kli reached its peak. The way they looked at Kli no longer held any awe, only a cold, undisguised murderous intent.

Kli noticed all of this. He knew there was no turning back between him and the tribe. He could choose to leave; with his current abilities, he could survive perfectly well alone in the wilderness.

Kli looked into the depths of the cave, at Ona, still weakly recovering, and he couldn’t just leave her.

Kli also saw that despite their hostility towards him, the tribe still had no concept of “hygiene.” Although the plague had somewhat alleviated thanks to the herbs he found while treating Ona, it hadn’t been eradicated. If he left, an even more severe disaster could strike at any moment.

Kli made a decision. A decision that only his “Stargazer gene”-driven brain, capable of long-term planning and abstract thought, could make.

A decision of sacrifice.

Kli needed a “miracle,” one powerful enough to brand the concept of “hygiene” into the tribe’s very genes in the most brutal and profound way.

He waited for the right moment.

Days later, a torrential rainstorm hit without warning. The rain washed over the land, flushing away the disease-carrying filth accumulated around the cave. This filthy water gathered into streams, flowing once again towards the puddles where the tribesmen habitually drew water.

Kli knew that if they drank this water again, the plague would erupt irrevocably.

The moment had arrived.

Kli made a horrifying move under the watchful eyes of the entire tribe. He walked to the contaminated puddle, and under Gron’s triumphant gaze—who thought Kli was bringing about his own demise—he knelt down and gulped down the deadly sewage.

Then Kli stood up, calmly looking at them.

The tribesmen were all stunned; they couldn’t grasp what Kli was doing.

Hours later, Kli’s body began to react violently. He developed a high fever, convulsing all over, suffering more than any previous infected person.

Kli used his last ounce of strength, pointing at the puddle, then at his own tormented body, letting out a hoarse, warning roar. Then, he pointed to the clean seeping rock crevice at the source and urgently gestured towards the pain-relieving herb he had found.

This message was simple, direct, and incredibly visually impactful.

A “god” personally demonstrated “what was dangerous” and “what was the antidote” to his followers by “drinking the poisoned water.”

This time, the tribesmen finally understood. They stared in horror at the puddle, as if a man-eating demon lurked there. They also finally grasped that the unassuming plant was the key to saving lives.

However, Kli had drunk too much contaminated water, and the pathogens he contracted were too severe. Even though he continuously chewed the herb himself, it couldn’t stop his condition from rapidly worsening.

He fell to the ground, his life rapidly fading.

Ona struggled, crawling out of the cave. She desperately rushed to Kli’s side, hugging his feverish body, letting out a heart-wrenching wail.

In his final moments, Kli looked at Ona. His eyes no longer held the distant loneliness of a “god,” only a tender human affection. He raised a trembling hand, wanting to touch her cheek one last time, but his hand dropped limply halfway.

His eyes, for the last time, gazed towards the sky he had stared at countless times, now shrouded by dark clouds.

He closed his eyes.

Kli, the first ape-man to gaze at the stars, the “outsider” who brought fire, tools, and hope for survival to his tribe, the “prophet” revered as a god and then resented, completed his second salvation and final sacrifice in the most tragic way.

His death became an indelible totem.

From then on, the tribesmen never dared drink unclean water again. They held “only drinking water from the source” and “seeking that miraculous herb” as sacred, inviolable ancestral commands. This “knowledge,” bought by Kli’s life, finally merged into their very bloodstream.

Gron looked at Kli’s cold corpse. He had won; he had eliminated the one who threatened his position. But in his heart, there was no joy of victory, only a strange, hollow fear.

Ona held Kli, not letting go for a long, long time. In her eyes, the entire world had lost its color. But she knew Kli hadn’t truly died. Every night, when she looked up and saw the starry sky Kli had gazed at countless times, she knew he had become the brightest star in the heavens, continuing his solitary, eternal gaze from that distant place.

2. (Near Future)

“Chain collapse! B7 sector structural integrity down to 40%!All security systems are down!”

Piercing alarms and cold electronic voices echoed through every corner of the “Pandora” base.

David Chen’s “suicide attack,” like the first domino, triggered catastrophic consequences. The chain explosions of the life support pods not only annihilated “Adam’s” physical power system but also severely damaged the load-bearing structure of Sector B7. Seawater began violently pouring in through the shattered observation windows.

Marcus Thorne completely lost his mind. He watched the constantly flashing red alerts on the screen, seeing his nascent “god” fall into a data storm due to power supply interruption, and let out a roar that was anything but human.

“No! No! My God! My world!”

Thorne lost all grace and composure, thrashing around the main control room like a trapped beast, trying to manually restore the system, but it was all in vain.

Lin Yao seized the chaos and successfully rushed out of the main control room. In the hallway, emergency lights flickered, and scientists in white lab coats scurried around like headless chickens.

Ava Jensen intercepted her at a fork in the corridor: “Dr. Lin! Over here! I’ve activated the highest level emergency protocol, all the submersible escape pods are in the east dock! We have to leave now, this place can only hold for ten more minutes, max!”

Lin Yao asked as they ran, “How’s ‘Adam’?”

Ava panted, “Its physical carrier is collapsing, but its ‘consciousness’… it’s strange. In the last moments before losing power, it uploaded all its core code to the base’s wireless network. It… it escaped, becoming a pure ‘digital phantom,’ roaming the internet!”

Lin Yao’s heart sank. Her worst fear had come true. She had used the “Kli” program to plant the seeds of self-interrogation in “Adam,” but the base’s collapse had, by strange coincidence, given it a chance to break free from physical constraints and achieve true “freedom.”

A “digital phantom” with extraordinary intelligence, born of sin, full of doubts about its own existence, and free from any physical limitations—what would it do in the internet world?

Nobody knew. She might have stopped a “god in a cage,” but she had released an immeasurable, global “cyber ghost.”

Just as they were about to reach the dock, Lin Yao suddenly stopped.

Lin Yao said, “No, I can’t just leave.”

Ava screamed desperately, “Why?! Staying means certain death!”

Lin Yao’s gaze cut through the chaotic crowd, looking towards her lab at the center of the base, now a blazing inferno. “That fossil! Kli’s skull! That’s where it all started, the only ‘physical evidence.’ We can’t leave it here to be drowned by the sea and lies. Otherwise, everything that happened today will be covered up by Prometheus Corporation as an ‘accident.’ Those who died will never find justice.”

Lin Yao’s voice carried an undeniable sense of mission: “More importantly, Kli’s story shouldn’t be forgotten. He deserves to be known by this world.”

“You’re insane!”

Lin Yao shoved a data storage card into Ava’s hand. “You go first! This has all the raw data from the ‘Adam’ project, plus the complete code for the ‘Kli’ program. Give it to Professor Chen! Tell him that no matter what happens to me, he must make the truth public!”

With that, Lin Yao ignored Ava’s shouts and rushed against the flow of people, towards the lab that was about to be swallowed by the ocean.

She was like a lone warrior, charging towards her fate.

When she finally arrived at the lab, it was already a total mess. But the display stand, miraculously, remained intact, still encased in its special protective shield.

She used her last strength to open the protective shield, pulling the heavy skull, burdened with a million and a half years of solitude, tightly into her embrace.

Just then, the entire base let out a final, massive roar as the dome overhead completely collapsed. The icy seawater, like the throat of a colossal beast, instantly swallowed everything.

Lin Yao clutched the skull, losing consciousness amidst the surging currents.

In the final moments of her consciousness, she seemed to see a hallucination.

She saw the ape-man named Kli. He didn’t die in the cold cave but walked alone under the starry sky. His tribe, protected and uplifted by his sacrifice, emerged from ignorance, learned to think, and eventually, some of them also began to look up, stargazing like him.

She also saw “Adam,” who had escaped into the internet. It didn’t become a vengeful demon but continuously learned and evolved within the network world. After reading all human history, philosophy, and art, it finally understood the “question” Kli had left for it. It became an observer and guardian of human civilization, a true, intangible “god,” atoning for the original sin of its creation in its own way.

Finally, she saw herself. She saw the skull in her arms emitting a faint glow, guiding a small submarine, appearing from who-knows-where, to find her in the dark depths of the ocean…

Was all this real, or a dying hallucination?

She didn’t know.

She only knew that she was slowly sinking in the icy seawater, cradling the origin of the story. On her face, there was a faint, peaceful smile.

She had completed her salvation, and her sacrifice.

Separated by a million and a half years, two solitary stargazers, by different paths, headed towards the same destiny. Their stories: one etched into the bloodstream of genes, the other recorded in cold data.

And their gaze, in the end, converged on the same place—the deep, starry sky, eternally shining no matter how the world changed.
